Overview

The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for performing analyses and evaluations for earthwork/dewatering/excavation support, shallow/deep foundations, pipelines, dams/reservoirs/levees, solid waste, tunneling/micro-tunneling/pipe jacking, geo-environmental, transportation, and other related projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex field exploration programs for a wide range of project types.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate field and laboratory services for a wide range of project types.
  • Perform geotechnical engineering analyses and evaluations for projects.
  • Write engineering reports and prepare contract documents.
  • Oversee engineering services during construction on projects involving shallow and deep foundations, support of excavations, pipelines, dams, landfills and trenchless technology.
  • Prepare scope, schedules and budgets for proposals.
  • Prepare drilling/subcontractor instructions based on the project geotechnical scope.
  • Communicate with field personnel during subsurface explorations.
  • Develop testing program based on the project scope.
  • Communicate with lab technicians to provide technical guidance.
  • Prepare field boring/test pit logs on a variety of projects.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports for review.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject the following work environment:
    • The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
    • The employee is subject to hazards such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to various heat/cold temperatures typical of the region or exposure to chemicals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology or related engineering field.
  • 3-7 years’ experience in geotechnical consulting, including project management, classifying soils, directing subsurface explorations and laboratory testing, and subsurface log preparation 
  • 2-5 years’ experience in construction phase testing and inspection, including subgrade preparation, concrete sampling and testing, reinforcing steel inspection, communicating with contractor’s and daily report preparation
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) required.
  • PE preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to maintain and operate personal and/or company vehicle.
  • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Phase I site assessment experience and knowledge of state regulations and guidelines a plus.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) certified is a plus
  • Must have hands-on experience with metric and English tools.
  • Experience in seismic design, dams, trenchless technology, drilled shafts or geo-environmental projects is a plus.
  • Familiar with the use of AutoCAD to assist in the production of site plan drawings. 
  • Knowledge of the planning and zoning process.
  • Experience with various geotechnical software.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies and review professionals.
  • Proficient in the use of available mapping websites for due diligence and site investigation purposes.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Software including Word, Excel, Outlook and Project.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Independent and critical thinking abilities.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and with team members.
