Overview

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for performing subsurface investigations, engineering analyses and evaluations related to site development projects, forensic investigations and/or to support design plans such as earth retaining structures, on-site wastewater treatment and disposal and foundation underpinning.  

Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise staff and contractors to complete field exploration programs for a wide range of project types.
  • Where required, performing field investigations of complicated projects within areas of high potential geotechnical risk such as carbonate rock, shallow groundwater, underlying organic deposits, high building loads.
  • Prepare drilling/subcontractor instructions based on the project geotechnical scope.
  • Oversee engineering services during construction on projects involving shallow and deep foundations, support of excavations and earthwork operations.
  • Develop geotechnical and construction phase inspections scopes, schedules and budgets for proposals.
  • Prepare field investigation instructions for the field team based on the project geotechnical scope.
  • Communicate field results during subsurface explorations with the project team and/or client, as required.
  • Develop design recommendations and/or identify the need for additional investigation/ testing based on field investigation results.
  • Develop and coordinate the laboratory testing program based on the field results.
  • Review and analyze field boring/test pit logs that identify subsurface soil composition and groundwater depths which are incorporated into a formal technical report.
  • Perform common geotechnical analysis for shallow foundations, deep pile foundations, earthwork, slope stability, retaining walls and pavements. 
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports that detail the field investigation data and design recommendations that will be reviewed by project managers and supervisors.
  • Review and analyze construction phase testing and inspection reports for compliance with project specifications and/or project recommendations for additional testing, as required.
  • Experience in assisting project manager with field work coordination and project management support.
  • Communicate with clients and/or contractors to discuss project related tasks and results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Soil Science, Geology or related engineering field; geotechnical engineering concentration preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in geotechnical consulting, construction material inspections or laboratory testing. 3-5 years’ experience in construction phase testing and inspection, including subgrade preparation, foundation installation inspection, fill placement testing, retaining wall construction oversight, soil stabilization oversight, concrete sampling and testing, reinforcing steel inspection, communicating with contractors and daily report preparation.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) required.
  • Professional Engineer preferred or have the ability to obtain PE license.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to maintain and operate personal and/or company vehicle.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) concrete field-testing technician certificate, accredited construction inspection/materials testing certificates, OSHA 40, OSHA 10, and/or American Portable Nuclear Gauge Association (APNGA) gauge training preferred.
  • Must have hands-on experience with metric and English tools.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Software Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to understand general computer commands and learn supporting software for entering field data, laboratory data, timesheets, etc. 
  • Ability to use common geotechnical software programs for foundation, slope stability, retaining wall and pavement designs.
  • Independent and critical thinking.
  • Self-starter who can work independently and with team members.
  • Proficient in the use of available mapping websites for due diligence and site investigation purposes.
  • Familiar with the use of AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or similar software’s to assist in the production of site plan drawings. 
  • Willing to mentor and implement training protocol to develop staff engineers and technicians.
  • Experience dealing with regulatory agencies and review professionals.
  • Knowledge of the planning and zoning process.
